The impact of products on consumers depends decisively on the packaging and not least on the packaging material. The increased ecological awareness of consumers and the growing demand for organic, eco and fair trade products thus also require responsibly packaged products. In practice, however, this is often not the case. Suppliers of organic goods, natural cosmetics or eco-products distinguish themselves by their promise of sustainability, but this is not always reflected in the packaging. An example of this would be organic foods that are packaged like conventional products.

Consistent sustainability pays off

“How organic products benefit from folding carton packaging” was investigated for the first time by the Justus Liebig University in Gießen. The study, which was commissioned by FFI (Fachverband Faltschachtel-Industrie e.V.) and Pro Carton, showed that organic products are perceived as being of higher quality, more credible and more sustainable if they are offered in folding cartons instead of conventional plastic packaging. The nine product categories examined were coffee, biscuits, muesli, pasta, chocolate, soap, shirts, frozen vegetables and pet food.

If sustainable, then holistic

Consumers value organic products more highly if they are also packaged sustainably.
This study has scientifically proven these correlations for the first time. Furthermore, the study has shown that consistent sustainability also pays off. The likelihood of purchase is therefore higher when organic products are presented in folding boxes. Manufacturers are therefore well advised to use this positive effect of carton packaging on organic products.
