Last Tuesday, we visited the 5th grade of the Johannes-Gaiser-Werkrealschule together with the BUND Regionalverband Nordschwarzwald Executive Director Patrick Maier. There, under the supervision and guidance of Mr Maier, the existing insect shelter was restored. The 27 pupils of the Johannes-Gaiser-Werkrealschule not only learned about the importance and necessity of nature conservation measures, but were also allowed to help build the new insect shelter themselves.

After the welcome by Head of Human Resources Jürgen Kilgus and Sustainability Officer Laura Deuringer from colordruck Baiersbronn, Mr Maier explained the connections between individual actors within an ecosystem and thus already aroused the curiosity of the pupils. Since over a period of 27 years the amount of flying insects has decreased by more than 75%, it is not surprising that all wild bee species are considered specially protected species according to the Federal Nature Conservation Act. After the importance of an insect shelter for the wild bees was conveyed, it was time for the practical part – handicrafts. The cans brought by the students were filled with bamboo, wood was drilled and the already existing frame was artistically painted. We were always ready to answer questions and lend a hand. After the completion of the insect shelter, all participants could reflect on what had been achieved on this day and why insects play a considerable role in nature conservation.

The morning was a great success for all involved. The students were able to learn about practical nature conservation work as well as the importance of sustainability for a company like colordruck Baiersbronn.
